Where the floor is

Every other system above stands on something somebody else already wrote — a runtime, a framework, an API. carlosOS stands on the bare machine. In each row below, the last line is the machine’s terms: public facts about an x86 boot, not claims about my code.

Shell Mine BIOS hands you one key at a time and nothing else. Line editing, history, parsing: none of that exists yet.
Memory management Mine There is no malloc until you are the one who wrote malloc.
Bootloader Mine 512 bytes exactly. Last two must be 0x55 0xAA or the BIOS moves on to the next device.
Below this line I wrote nothing
BIOS firmware Given Copies sector one to 0x7C00 and jumps. After that it only answers if you know the interrupt to call.
x86, at your first instruction Given 16-bit real mode. 20-bit addressing. No allocator, no library, no net.

Those two rows are the same on any x86 machine that still boots through BIOS rather than UEFI. The three above them I wrote.

I study computer science at Texas A&M, minor in cybersecurity. The coursework is systems and security. The rest of the time I’m building the things on this page.

I got into freelance after noticing how many businesses around here have broken websites and email that never arrives. Fixable stuff, and honestly kind of fun to dig into. Same habit either way: read the thing, find where it actually fails, fix that.

Type

Display: a Helvetica-lineage grotesque from the system stack. Text: your machine’s own serif — the stack asks for ui-serif first, so New York on a Mac and the browser’s own serif elsewhere. Nothing is downloaded, so the page reads at first paint. Data: monospace, and tabular lining figures on every price and every figure set in the data face; the running serif keeps oldstyle.

Scale

One ratio, the perfect fourth, 1.333: 9 · 12 · 16 · 21.3 · 28.4 · 37.9 · 50.5 · 67.3 · 89.8. Display sizes interpolate through the middle of the range and pin to a rung at each end, so at 390px and at 1440px every size on the page is a rung of that ladder. Every measured padding, margin and gap is a multiple of 6.5px, a quarter of the 26px baseline. Band spacing below the masthead is always a whole multiple of 26, between one and six of them.

Grid

Twelve columns, four under 760px, drawn in hairline so you can see them. The drawn lines and the content columns are one construction: same cap, same margin, same gutter, so they still line up at 1920. Every measured padding, margin and gap is a multiple of 6.5px, a quarter of the 26px baseline; the exceptions are set in em because they belong to the type and not to the grid. Band spacing below the masthead is always a whole multiple of 26, between one and six of them. The red line down the margin is the live pole’s conductor, and it changes sides with the switch.

Build

One HTML file, one request — this page and nothing else. The position is a URL fragment and two selectors, so /#p02 opens the page already thrown, the back button undoes a throw, and nothing here needs JavaScript. One inline line adds a class; that class is the only thing that lets motion hide anything.
